On a major social media site, there have been a couple of conversations where people have expressed concern about talking on reflector systems linked to an unknown and undefined number of other reflectors/repeaters/hotspots, etc. I tried to question them to find out what the specific concern might be, since if a station is operating properly there really shouldn't be any concern. It turned into a bit of a circular conversation, returning to something along the line of "I don't want to transmit if I don't know where my transmission is going", which is funny because that is exactly what happens with an HF rig and an RF transmission.
This led to another interesting thought, are there too many reflectors? Should there be some voluntary guidelines regarding linking reflectors (ala, band plan)?
I certainly don't want D-STAR to end up like another mode, with thousands of rooms each with one person in them. The freedom to spin up a reflector is a great feature.

I thought I should follow up here after listening to the discussion of these topics over the last couple weeks of the Roundtable.
The discussions were wonderful and thoughtful, just as they always aree. Many great points were made, and I agree with the consensus, there are not "too many" reflectors. The only additional item I would mention on the subject would be figuring out how to get information about which reflectors are most active into the hands of the new D-STAR user. I know I struggled getting D-STAR working and finding traffic in the beginning, until I found the Constellation. With the Constellation in place, I feel far less of an urge to look for traffic elsewhere.
As for linking, I was trying to understand the concerns voiced by a couple individuals about not having a complete 100% understanding about exactly where their transmission might end up. I didn't understand this concern, nor did anyone else (it seems) on the Roundtable. This discussion flared up again on Facebook, and one of the individuals still can't seem to define exactly what it is they are concerned about. There have been repeated attempts by myself and others to try and understand the concern to help ease the "fear", but it never gets anywhere. At this point I'm willing to consider this "fear" completely irrational and unfounded and not concern myself or others with the topic again.
