k7exj: I couldn't find the thread on electric car RFI so I figured I'd post it here. Listening to the podcast for last week there were a lot of references to electric and hybrid vehicles and the operation of digital voice, analog FM and hotspots. Jan 27, 2018 at 06:21
k7exj: Since most noise is amplitude modulated one of the great pluses to FM analog repeaters was "no mobile noise". With digital voice it's even harder for am noise to break through. But HF CW and SSB (and RTTY and PSK) are basically amplitude modulated. Jan 27, 2018 at 06:22
k7exj: - and subject to noise. My XYL's Nissan Leaf has no RFI on VHF/UHF in FM modes and we can use out hotspot and analog/digital voice with no issues. However I posted a test in which SSB/CW reception on HF had quite a lot of noise.. S4 to S6 depending.. Jan 27, 2018 at 06:24
k7exj: - depending upon speed (faster = more noise). I suspect this is due to the use of a switching inverter which changes the DC current from the big battery to AC current for the drive motor. So we just stick to digital with no issues.

VE7LEE: I purchase an electric car, Fiat 500e and it does not cause RFI to a FT1D or Icom IC80 radio on FM or digital. Jan 25, 2018.
VE7LEE: All cars that I tested did not cause radio interference on VHF or UHF. I did not test out HF. Jan 25, 2018.
K6JM: Also, when we did a test drive of the Chrysler Pacifica hybrid, I did not bring along radios to check. Before I buy, I will bring along the old standby -- an am portable tuned between stations, plus my battery-operated FT817ND tuned to 40 meters SSB. Jan 25, 2018.

Two weeks ago I noticed what sounded like ignition noise on the RF output of my wife's MD-380 DMR HT while she was driving her Nissan Leaf. Since the leaf has no ignition this seemed strange to me.
Subsequent investigations determined that the problem was in the speaker/mic (from Tyterra). When the speaker/mic was unplugged the "ignition" noise went away. Note that she did not hear any ignition-like noise... the sound was only on her transmitted signal.
So far only HF operations hear RFI noise from the Leaf.
