N6HKH: TO ALL: PLEASE REVIEW AND VOTE ON THE POLL QUESTION IN THE GENERAL ROUND TABLE DISCUSSION BOARD ABOVE.
KF4UCE: Voted in the poll, Mike....Saturday mornings are tough. Particularly with any club activities like breakfasts or VE testing. Thursday night is perfect!
W6EDS: I voted as well. I spend most Saturday mornings on HF because I don't have the time to do so during a work week... Therefore, I prefer the round table remain on Thursday nights.
W6EDS: Is the Internet the new ham radio? If we all start using a HT on simplex talking to a D-something is there a risk the FCC may auction off all the ham radio spectrum?
K6KD: The internet is a key component of all the digital modes today. This isn't your grandfather's ham radio any more.
w6oso: I do not like Saturday Mornings. This a family day and a project day. Saturday is also the day for club meetings breakfasts, lunches, and VE sessions. How about Friday nights or
KF4UCE: W6EDS has a good point.FCC--->"Why do hams need some much spectrum when we can force them to shift everything to the internet? Limit them to one band like 2m."Plenty of buyers out there for the spectrum we do have.We need the Internet but we also need RF.
W6EDS: urgentcomm.com/policy/fcc-official-addresses-t-band-issue-during-hearing-congress
Congress mandated that public-safety licensees clear the T-Band frequencies (470-512 MHz) in the UHF band <snip> so the spectrum can be auctioned (continued...)
W6EDS: Under the law, the FCC is required to “begin a system of competitive bidding” for the T-Band spectrum currently licensed to public-safety entities by March 2021. So they are moving public safety and selling their spectrum. We need use it or lose it!!!
W6KD: Isn't an HT talking to a local RF hotspot on simplex still using the spectrum?
wa6jfk: I like the digital modes, but I do have a fear that some think that driving down the interstate using a hotspot feeding off the iphone/droid somehow equate that with HF etc..
W6EDS: Ya but the new rule could simply be 1/2 watt max power and restricted to 446.000-446.999 only and they auction off the rest of 70cm.
W6KD: It doesn't "equate" to HF, any more than using a 2m FM rig through a repeater equates to HF. The cell site on its tower or mountaintop isn't much different functionally from a repeater on its tower or mountaintop.
wa6jfk: So one could ask why not just use the iPhone to make the contact in the first place?
W6KD: So then we should have QRP ops go buy a linear and an AM transmitter to artificially occupy as much bandwidth as possible?
KF4UCE: W6KD, sure we're still using RF but once the camel's nose is in the tent, who knows where we'll end up. Secondary allocations, reduced power, eliminated frequency ranges, etc.
W6EDS: I believe in CA driving down the interstate using a hotspot feeding off the iphone/droid (a cell phone) is illegal. Using a mic, not necessarily so... (unless being unsafe).
W6KD: I think the bigger risk is all the unused repeaters sitting silent out there with nobody using those freqs at any power level...
VA3TWT: XRF021B changed their IP address in the past few months. That may be the issue. Updating the host file may correcy the problem. Ban Edit
KF4UCE: W6KD: Good point on the repeaters. Outside of the weekly analog nets for NTS/ARES/NWS, our analog repeaters out here are very, very, very quiet. Even the IRLP and Echolink nodes are collecting dust.
ki4frj: The Kenwood I looked at was only DUAL Banded.
KK6MYS: W6KD, is there a way to get the raw data stream from any reflector over the internet?
