The Shoutbox updates in real time if it's pretty active. Otherwise, if it's been a few minutes between replies, the page will need to be refreshed.
On Safari, there is an easy workaround which causes the feed to update at defined intervals regardless of activity, even if the window does not have focus, by using a Safari extension. I have seen similar extensions, or add-ons, or plug-ins for other browsers but have not tested them, except for Chrome on the Mac. I have tried a solution and it works. See message below.
For Safari, download and install the extension Auto Refresh (Safari | Safari Extensions, then search for refresh). After installing go to Safari | Preferences to enable Auto Refresh and set the default refresh interval. In the tab with this forum, click the icon to the left of the field to enter URLs to show the Refresh bar. Change the interval if desired, an hit Start. The window will refresh at the selected interval even if focus is shifted to another window.
If anyone tries any similar feature on a different browser, please feel free to add to this thread.

If you google "firefox auto refresh" a number of links come up including www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cwPVAkyUbwwhich has this video: (I have not tried this one, so I cannot verify it will reload if the window loses focus, but I suspect it will. If anyone tries this one or others, please comment.)

In Chrome, google search Chrome autorefresh. I selected Super Auto Refresh based on the number of positive reviews. After selecting this, there is a button on the right Add to Chrome. After it is added, there is an icon on the right within the URL text box that turns on and gives the refresh interval. It will refresh even if focus changes to another window. My experience is with Chrome on the Mac, but most likely it will work the same on a PC.
